I think back to the day when Kathy told us about contract grading, and the struggle we all felt to have the same grade. I think you are totally right-we have been trained to work for ourselves and by ourselves in order to please a teacher or be "accepted" in a privileged role because of our grades. This was something I really started to realize in my last year of my undergrad, at which time I stopped caring about my grades and working hard because I felt like I was being assessed as a number and no longer a person. ONE TEACHER, just one, in my entire fourth year, motivated me to learn for the sake of learning. It was really difficult for me to even apply to this program even though it interested me because I felt like university was so impersonal and dogmatic in their assessment.
I am so proud to have watched you fall in love with education (from what I can see) and take real steps in creating a better education system for current high school students. You're an inspiration and this website is amazing! I thought it was so powerful how you began to realize that this project was being taken over by the ideas and attitudes of other people-it really is a global call to break down the misconceptions of feminism. I myself have had a hard time with this word, but I want to believe we can take back its importance and power. It is crazy to think how so many of us profess to believe in equal rights but would never associate themselves to a word that means equality! This video is a start in the act of changing that misconception. Well done. The Site C dam, while perhaps the most controversial, is not a unique dam. The BC government clearly and openly promotes and supports hydro and plans to expand BC Hydro in the coming years (see: BC Energy Plan). And they do this at the expense of other types of electricity production (namely nuclear, which is banned in BC).

A lot of people are not well versed on the effects of dams on the environment because they see hydro as "green" power. Sadly, Site C is not unique (except for perhaps the Indigenous issues, which would vary depending on the size and location of the dam).

People will get up in arms about this dam specifically without realizing that many many dams will have the same effects, and even if this dam is defeated another will just take its place. We need to take a close look at BC's power policies and decide what we value. Programs like these in our community perpetuate the gender divide and encourage both man boxes and woman boxes deciding what girls and boys SHOULD like and WANT to do. Gender is of course a socially constructed idea and this program will then put undue pressure on both parents and children to choose a gender camp rather than a summer camp. While there are most definitely girls that love to bake and have manicures and that is 100% ok, all children and adolescents should be able to have the choice to do whatever they like to do be it kayaking or cooking. This program is proof that our society is still obsessed with categorizing children and people rather than celebrating their similarities. As a art newbie, I found it so useful to begin to understand these terms. I didn't watch the film but I enjoyed reading your post- particularly the beginning where you referred to most genres of movies to be 50% crap, 25% watchable, and 25% good, because I agree. While I will admit that racist rhetoric (depending on how racist and the intent behind the rhetoric) usually do not bother me in films, I can see how they can be problematic. Personally, I would have found stereotyped roles and obnoxious songs to be more annoying. It is a shame that the film was not more enjoyable to you but I can't help but wonder how positive of an expectation one can have on a title that combines the word girl and trash. jwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03450931793812818136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2595597816509256415.post-67056046645404306932016-03-29T06:50:54.697-07:002016-03-29T06:50:54.697-07:00Interesting video, I enjoyed the post! I thought the part where he said "Education is about inspiring ones mind not just filling their head" to be pretty relevant considering we are all trying to become teachers. It's interesting how something so simple can change a perspective. Growing up, I was always being told how my performance in school is the 'be-all and end-all' of success, but it was a simple quote that went along the lines of "there is a difference between educated and intelligence" that sort of changed my perspective rather than a video.jwhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03450931793812818136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2595597816509256415.post-84167616875716732422016-03-21T20:37:32.070-07:002016-03-21T20:37:32.070-07:00This is so powerful Erika. Especially in relation to some of the TedTalk videos we've seen lately on Pornography, which directly discuss the effects of young boys having access to pornography. As pornography becomes so normalized in young men's lives, it seems that these can deeply effect the interactions between boys and girls. And on the flip side, I'm glad that the girl you speak of was empowered enough to say no, and I worry about how many girls would feel tempted by the attention from boys and be convinced to send nudies. What can we authentically do as teachers in a culture ramped with pornography and nudity? I still find myself wondering where I fit in and what I should and could say or do. While I find that Macklemore has a more stream of consciousness style of song, both his and Beyonce's "Formation" shed light on the #BlackLivesMatter movement. I think it is really important to move towards including men in the responsibility of contraceptives. Men and women can, and should, be learning about the various forms of contraceptives, their reliability, as well as the possible health side effects. Men and women can be responsible for protecting and safeguarding each other's health in more of a collaborative partnership, rather than how it sometimes can be... solely the responsibility of the woman (or burden). Specifically because you don't have to remember to take a pill everyday, there is a lot less room for human error with the IUD. Lots of women like to feel in control over their contraception, which is why the pill can feel empowering however, there is a lot of room for error, and the research seems to show that there is indeed a lot of error. Missing a day here and there, or not taking the pill at the exact same time everyday can have varying effects depending on the type of pill, and the individual woman.

In terms of putting contraception into men's hands, I am sure there are a lot of women out there who will feel apprehensive about this. If you've just met a guy, are you really going to trust that he is using contraceptive? Form what I know about Vaselgel though, I think women would be more trusting of that than say, a male version of a daily pill. Vaselgel does seem like a great option for those in long term relationships however, because, as you say, it is less invasive than an IUD, and does not need daily reminders like the pill.

It's exciting that this kind of development is in the works. Bringing men into the discussion on contraceptive, and making them active participants in the process of safe sex, will undoubtedly change the dynamics around sex, and move the responsibility of contraception into a more equal realm.
