Riot Might Bring Vancouver Down to Earth

Another great article from the Tyee! This opinion piece is definitely not something you would find in the Times or on CBC. I know we are all getting pretty tired of discussion and news about the riots but this article really struck me as something to think about. We are constantly bombarded by media messages saying we live in "the best place on earth". Even our beer and cellphone company commercials aim to feed into this idea that this is the best country in the world and we should be so proud because we are so unique and so much better than everyone else (in particular, the U.S.) But what is this message doing to our culture subconsciously? Is it making us stuck up narcissists?

The author of the article In Reid, writes:

"...there's another lesson Vancouver needs to learn from the riot.
We're not exceptional. Vancouver is no different. The same problems there are the same problems here.
We are not special. But we think we are. That's our biggest problem.
We're like the Americans of Canada, too full of our exceptionalism to see what's really going on all around us."

Ouch. I hope the article's title is right and that the riot brings us a bit more down to earth again.
