Abolish the Grading System

It is my belief that we do not need grades within our education system. Grades are a means of labeling students and these labels follow students throughout their education. By assigning grades education becomes a competition. No matter how kind and supportive the comments made on assignments are children are programmed to pay attention to what educators have placed importance on, the grades. Acceptance into post secondary education will occur based on students innovative thinking in regards to the program they are applying for. Portfolios and community service will be another means of receiving acceptance into University and College.

You may be thinking grades are a motivator and grades are needed to provide academic drive. I disagree; I truly believe that the grades that are placed on report cards and assignments within the early years of school can have a powerful impact stifling creativity and decrease students wiliness and motivation to achieve. Students who excel academically will also benefit from the elimination of grades, as their goals will relate to new innovative projects and research not a fixation with A's. Can you imagine the motivation struggling students would feel knowing that their learning and hard work could be used to get them excepted into University and College because they do not have an academic record that has predetermined their future?
